Cambria Artist Kathy Palmer Highlights Nature in Collection of Paintings on Display through Oct. 29

From the artist:

In 1976, I graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from CSU Northridge. I moved to Cambria in 1979 and raised two daughters here. Over the years I have worked with a variety of mediums: stained glass, mosaics, pastels, acrylics, and oils. In the 80’s, I was fortunate to have taken watercolor classes with beloved local artist, Mary Cole. And for almost 20 years I painted fantasy figurines and soldiers for the Soldier Factory!

I enjoy spending time outdoors, gardening and walking every day. And it is nature that inspires much of my artwork. Often a painting does not seem complete without a bird, or a bee, or a butterfly included! While living in Mexico for six years, my husband, Eddie, and I were immersed in the culture and especially loved the tradition of Día de los Muertos. I enjoy making calavera characters and some of these are in this show.

Over the last couple of years my style has been influenced by Kaffe Fassett and his niece, Erin Gafill from Big Sur. A recent show of their works at the Monterey Art Center, “Color Duets” with joyful compositions of vivid color, light, and patterns, showed me a new way to have fun.

I am grateful to my daughter, Clarity, for requesting a painting of the Nine Muses last year for her birthday present, which led me to research Greek mythology. Greek pottery and motifs have worked their way into quite a few of these paintings.

I have been painting with my friend, Terri, via Zoom every week for the last year and a half. Her friendship and enthusiasm have been an inspiration for creativity and exploration.

And I am also grateful for the daily loving encouragement from Eddie, to keep on painting!
