This show by artist Lori Slater features an eclectic group of watercolors, oil, and acrylics that she painted over the last decade. This collection does not have a theme, or show an evolution, but a state of mind which might be seen as Subject Abstracted. Slater’s works use architecture and nature for their formal possibilities, moving between formalism, abstraction and surrealism while satisfying the artist’s expressive needs. The combination of shapes, color, and value creates a mood.

Slater grew up in San Jose, California, drawing and painting at an early age. She attended San Francisco’s Academy of Art in 1975 and continued art and humanity studies, earning a bachelor’s at UC Santa Barbara in 1980. In 1979, Slater began selling her paintings at outdoor art shows like Mill Valley Art Festival, the Santa Barbara Sunday art show, and Beverly Hills’ Affaire in the Gardens. She continued this for forty years while occasionally showing in galleries and public spaces. Slater is a long-time resident of Cambria and has lived here since 1992.
Slater’s exhibit is on display through May 31 at the Cambria Library at 1043 Main Street. The library is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am – 6pm; Thursday from 9am – 5pm; and Friday and Saturday 10am – 5pm.
